The Cost of Killing

The Cost of Killing is the next novel in the Derrick Driver series, following the story of a Boston detective who is presumed dead, but has actually gone underground to seek revenge on a billionaire he believes funded the hit that killed his girlfriend.

As the story unfolds, readers are introduced to a cast of complex characters, including the billionaire, who has escaped responsibility for previous crimes and is now using his vast wealth to manipulate and corrupt politicians in order to put his pawns in positions of power. The billionaire's daughter, who is suddenly confronted with a life she never knew existed, becomes a key player in the story as well.

The novel also features a former cyber detective for the police, who has left the PD and is now the CEO of the fastest-growing cyber security company in the world. A hacker, previously the target of the cyber detective, wants something new that has previously escaped him, adding another layer to the story. And the introduction of a global cabal intent on making sure the billionaire doesn't interfere with their plans, adding even more tension and intrigue to the novel.

As the story progresses, readers will be drawn into a world of deceit, corruption, and manipulation as the characters struggle to uncover the truth and bring the guilty parties to justice. Programmed to Win by K. A. Brown caught my attention almost immediately. Page after page, I became more and more invested in the characters. The development of the storyline kept me engaged to the point I could not put the book down. I lean toward romance novels, but this is definitely a must-read. The author has a true gift. While this breaths of a political novel, you will be surprised by the twists and turns and the unexpected nature of this book. Party affiliations have been set aside. This book does not choose sides. I look forward to reading the sequel to this novel.

All I can say is WOW. There are so many plot twists and turns-and some shocking surprises along the way--that I was on the edge of my seat until the very end. This debut novel by Brown is definitely worth the read, and I look forward to more from this author.

K. A. Brown shows stunning intelligence in his writing style. As a professional proofreader and avid reader, I have read and/or reviewed thousands of books. Yet, I cannot remember another book with an intricate plot that is not cliché or over-complicated. His characters are not only believable, but they're also relatable. His plot and subplots work together to create a fascinating story that could happen in real life. His writing style is unique-complicated, yet not overwhelming; detailed, yet not even a little bit boring. If you enjoy political suspense-or even if, like me, you typically don't - I highly recommend this book.
